OUR PRODUCE

EGGS

Our pastured laying hens are raised in open pastures, where they have access to fresh air, sunshine, and plenty of space to roam and forage for food. The hens are able to express their natural behaviours, such as dust bathing, scratching the ground for insects and seeds, and taking regular walks.

Compared to hens that are raised in crowded indoor facilities, pastured hens tend to be healthier and happier. They are less prone to disease and stress, and produce eggs that are more nutritious and flavourful.

Raising pastured laying hens is also better for the environment, as it reduces the use of pesticides, fertilisers, and other harmful chemicals that are commonly used in industrial egg production. We will only use antibiotics on our hens if they are not well - never as routine.

We deliver every 2 weeks and our subscription options are 12, 18, 24, or 30 eggs. Delivery charges are £2.50 for Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead and Tring.  We also offer a free collection service from the car park opposite Hill Farm Café. You can choose collection as an option when you subscribe to get our eggs. Or if you’re already a subscriber, please just drop us an email and we can change this for you.

VEG

Seasonal vegetables from a no-dig garden are a sustainable and healthy way to consume fresh vegetables. No-dig gardening is a method that prioritizes soil health and biodiversity, using compost and natural materials to create nutrient-rich soil that doesn't require tilling. This is how we grow our produce at Cheyney’s. By following the seasons, a variety of vegetables can be grown and harvested throughout the year. Eating locally-grown produce also reduces food miles and supports small-scale agriculture, making it a great choice for the environment and local community.

We contract grow for some of our restaurant customers as well as plant different vegetables at different times of the year to include in our seasonal veg boxes. We also work with Organic North, who only supply organic produce, to subsidise our yields throughout the year, allowing us to offer a small and large veg boxes. We will always choose to buy British produce first, but may occasionally buy from Europe. This would only happen if there’s been bad weather in the UK, and some basic staple ingredients, eg. onions, where unavailable. None of the produce from Europe is air-freighted.

We also offer a free collection service from the car park opposite Hill Farm Café. You can choose collection as an option when you subscribe to get your veg. Or if you’re already a subscriber, please just drop us an email and we can change this for you.

BEEF

Our herd of pedigree White Park Cattle graze the open pastures of Ashridge estate and its surrounding areas, filling their fundamental role in the healthy and resilient ecology in Ashridge. White Park cattle are an ancient breed of cattle that have been in existence for over 2,000 years. They were once widely distributed throughout the British Isles and were even used as sacrificial animals in Celtic religious ceremonies. Today, they are a rare breed with a small population, but are valued for their hardiness, adaptability, and ability to graze in areas of cultural and ecological significance. They are also known for their distinctive white coloration, docile temperament, and flavorful beef.

We process our animals between 3-4 years old once they have reached appropriate size. The herd grazes the pastures all year round, giving them a rich and varied diet of grasses, legumes and some forbs (non-grassy plants).

We offer our 100% grass fed beef in the form of different beef boxes, throughout the year, plus we have lots of individual cuts available to add to your egg or veg box subscription.

COFFEE from ThreeBrothersRoast

We’re partnering with ThreeBrothersRoast, a fantastic coffee roaster based in Hertfordshire, to supply delicious, ethical coffees from all around the world, each with unique tasting notes. You can choose either whole beans or they can be ground for you to your preferred grind.

ThreeBrothersRoast focus on delivering some of the most exceptionally flavoured and limited coffee available on the marketplace. They source only the highest quality speciality green beans from a company that offers transparent trade with all aspects of coffee farming and production.  They only stock coffee that’s been graded 85 above (SCA Grading).

The world of coffee can be extremely volatile with many parts of the industry known to use unethical practices, so with transparent trade the goal is to provide all stakeholders with clear, accessible information about all elements of sourcing coffee. More importantly, as an independent roaster in the UK, the more information they have when purchasing their product, enables them to help further small/micro-lot farms and their progression within the industry.  These farms are specifically chosen because they follow and help build a better ethical foundation for those that work for them, and the communities around them.

Working directly with ThreeBrothersRoast, we’re so excited to offer the local area greater access to speciality coffee. They roast each individual bag to order so the flavours and stories of every origin are delivered right to your doorstep.

Their coffee is available either as whole beans or ground.  We will contact you a few days before your delivery to find out if you need beans or ground, and if so, how you would like it done.
